He took me in when I had nowhere else to go.
He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.
He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.
I have to stop this. It can’t happen.
My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable.
Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.
I took her in, because I thought I was helping.
She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement.
As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.
The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me.
But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.
And her boyfriend’s father.
Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

Birthday Girl, a standalone from Douglas, was the perfect introduction to her writing. Whilst known for her numerous of works Douglas latest standalone delivered packed quite a punch with a story that is thought provoking.
It’s a book that gets everyone talking for a number of reasons. As the story revolves around age difference trope and whilst I have read some stories that I enjoyed immensely. I never go seeking these stories out deliberately. Until Birthday Girl, that is
It was only the week after release, I discovered the subject matter. I was curious before but this heightened my interest in this book. I wanted to be pushed and Jordan and Pike did this. It was a slow burn of the good kind, one that was dealt not swiftly instead built to the sweet point before letting nature take course.
It was only time before all those pent up feelings and emotions exploded and it was such a sweet sight. However that was only half the story, there was so much to these two characters who lives are entwined by chance and find themselves wanting to break barriers. Those barriers though have a cost at the end of the day and this story has plenty. It’s never a smooth sailing but that one of the amazing aspects of this book
I can see why people, loved and hated this book, it’s subjective to people’s thoughts, as Jordan isn’t like many other heroines out there in some aspects. She is an old soul in a young body and though she has young brash thoughts at times. Readers have to remember this is a girl who only 19 and facing a lot on her plates. Pike was a welcome distraction but they both needs to face their problems.
Young and old, there was never a question a mind of age . More how they could meld their lives together well and face life head on. As after years of heartache, it was never going to be a moment in their lives, they were connected on a deep level. Birthday Girl is the sort of story that doesn’t come often , one that makes everyone who comes into path sit up and take notice. It’s the type of story, that not the bread and butter of this industry. But a special story that makes you the reader really think and I loved this story for that and so much more .
