Blog Tour: Honest Intentions by Kennedy Layne

USA Today Bestselling Author Kennedy Layne continues the Safeguard Series with this fast-paced romantic suspense novel that leads the SSI team on the trail of a serial killer who continually seems to be one step ahead…

Coen Flynn has always done the right thing, even it meant siding against his own family. His sense of justice was what led him to take a job in law enforcement, though his choice of agency was a bit unorthodox. His current assignment was believed to be a simple protection detail. He was never supposed to be identified by his charge, but a murder took priority and changed the course of his mission.

Brettany Lambert’s life is suddenly rocked when she finds the body of a dead friend on the eve of what was supposed to be a special wedding. Now Brettany and Coen are trapped in the middle of a blizzard and their attraction will fuel the heat of temptation. Good intentions always have a way of backfiring, but his desired intent won’t matter if a notorious serial killer can finish what he started.

Once again , I’m late to the table but definitely will be changed in the future.  I discovered Kennedy Layne in my quest to read more crime type of stories. Whilst this  book Honest Intentions refers to  past events that happened in the previous books in the series. Honest Intentions can be read standalone though you will be like me wanting to read the other instalments.  As you have to wonder once you have finished this instalment, how this exactly unfolded to lead to this particular point in the story arc.

SSI is an unique team and it’s no surprised  with this instalment  the team is still on the case helping the FBI and marshals deal with a serial killer  leading them on a merry chase  .   Layne puts Coen into the spotlight , who has been sent to winter slopes to protect a woman who could be the next target. Unfortunately things haven’t gone to plan as the team has hoped. Seems like there is a killer a lose in the area and could be the very one they are  trying to tracking and capture .  Forcing Coen take thing into his hands as Brettney the woman he was supposed to be protecting finds the latest victim and turns up her world upside down . As Brettney could be any typical Caucasian America with a white collar job. Her life is simple and uninteresting so why she  could be the  killer’s next target

One of the biggest intriguing aspects of this novel and  Coen was holding all the cards it seems but he wasn’t ready to reveal them yet.  The story is more less follows Brettney and Coen happens to pop up at the most convenient  or inconvenient times  depending how you look at things. As the whole arc entwines with the series arc leading to an interesting situation  involving the leads.

Brettney was so  simple and uncomplicated so I loved the intrig that was behind her . Why her was the question on my lips. As the  way we are introduced to Brettney is genius as we get to see  it from  a witness perspective someone caught up in a murder before she learns dark truth lurking at her door. Those moments really shaped the novel , as  this novel is pretty fast paced.   I loved the unique name , thought it did get a while to get my head around her nick name.  She a ordinary person enjoying her life , not ready for the next stage of her life. I don’t think she  expected for the bombshell but she took it in her stride pretty well.

I love how the author entwined things together with the plots despite the mistakes from the characters as they tried to deal with everything and fell in love. It was always connected to the series arc  though it read as a standalone and enjoyed getting glimpses into the bigger picture especially the other members of the team .

If there was anything that made the book least enjoyable there wasn’t. I would  of liked to get an greater insight into  Coen’s mind as  I didn’t as much I wanted to.   I wanted to be shown more of his past rather then be told as it was still affecting him in his present life whether he wanted it or not to .  I loved the combination of intrigue, passion and suspense weaved into this story . It really shone with the ending which didn’t disappoint. I can’t wait to see how the author wraps things up in the final book considering what just happened. Honest Intentions is a book you don’t want to miss if you want something different with your crime suspense.
