The Darkest Corner (Gravediggers Book 1) by Liliana Hart
Date of Publication: May 23, 2017
New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Liliana Hart’s first book in her suspenseful Gravediggers series, featuring an elite group of mysterious men who might be dead to the world, but are also tasked with saving it—and no one can ever know.
The Gravediggers aren’t exactly what they seem. They’re the most elite of the world’s fighting forces—and all they have in common is that they’ve been betrayed by the countries they’ve died for. Because they are dead. To their country, their military, and their families.
Sometimes the dead do rise…
Deacon Tucker is a dead man walking. A former black ops agent, he was disavowed and stripped of all honor before being recruited as a Gravedigger. But his honor and good name no longer matter, because no one knows he’s alive, and he’ll never get the recognition he deserves. His mission is simple: save the world or die trying. And for God’s sake, don’t ever fall in love. That’s a rule punishable by death. The kind of death a man can’t be brought back from.
Tess Sherman is the only mortician in Last Stop, Texas. She has no idea how Deacon Tucker ended up in her funeral home, but she’ll eat her hat if he’s only a funeral home assistant. Deacon is dangerous, deadly, and gorgeous. And she knows her attraction to him can only end in heartache.
Deacon is on a mission to stop the most fatal terror attack the world has ever known—what’s known as The Day of Destiny—a terrorist’s dream. But when he discovers Tess has skills he can use to stop them, he has to decide if he can trust her with secrets worth dying for. And, most important, he has to decide if he can trust her with his heart.
Hart has been on my to be read list for a while because it seems everyone can’t seem to get enough of her writting. So when an opportunity was presented to read her latest novel , The Darkest Corner. I jumped at the chance, despite not knowing a thing about the book and I wasn’t disappointed . The first in a new series called The Gravedigger. The Darkest Corner is a suspense novel with a twist. It may have some sexy military men with deadly skills. But these men aren’t just any ordinary men…
They are officially dead and they do not exist. The perfect premise for a group of men who are tasked to save the world and determined to do so any way possible whilst working for a covert agency which more secretive then the Pentagon. Their mission is simple to fight domestic terrorism and stop bad guys in their tracks. ..
For the most while , it has been easy keeping things a secret . However things are about to change when their secrets come into the spotlight and the leader of the team is forced to take one of the team . And for Deacon Tucker it means acting on something that he has hidden away for so long in a dark corner and regaining the one piece of humanity he doesn’t want to admit is there.
Deacon was once a CSI agent until he was blacklisted after he refused to do something he thought was immoral. Forced to go on the run, he was recruited just the right moment and never looked back. He hasn’t regretted the decision to become a gravedigger and enjoys his new life. He may see the worst things in life but he has heart. A heart that is tested by one women who won’t go away in hurry.
Tess who is his supposed boss who is more then a cover story to him thought he won’t admit things to her. Whilst supposedly working for Tess as a grave digger and helping around the funeral parlour. She grown on him and things haven’t been easy as she totally clueless to the great picture of what going on. She is more concerned about her crazy family who drive her insane.
In a perfect world she would be the dutiful daughter ,trying to make a living. However it is the total opposite world. It is a world where her mother acts like a teenager still and is totally irresponsible . Leaving her to deal with her grandmother who she loves and adores but is just a tiny little eccentric . She got enough trying to keep them out of trouble especially with the rumours about the men who work for her. It hard being Tess with gossip every where she turns thank to her mother who likes to live life to the extreme . She just wishes for own life with excitement. Looking relatives and caring for the dead aren’t cutting it anymore. She isn’t wishing for too much is she ?
Until a situation arise which leads to the story for the book and Tess thrust into their world unexpectedly. As her family isn’t exactly is boring as she makes things out to be .
Throwing Deacon for a spin and forcing him to address things that he rather not . ….
The Darkest Corner is a romantic suspense first but it fell a more of a story about family and crazy secretive covert agency happened to be laying around. It worked despite how it sounds.
Hart grabbed me from the start with that prologue that set the tone for this novel. These men are honest men who are placed into difficult positions. Whilst they may of given tup and sacrificed things. They were still honourable men and that shinned through. I loved the Texas small town setting. Where they knew everyone and no one was anymore wiser. Excerpt for Tess who was left to sort out things and then the book really got interesting. It was small town at its finest meets suspense. And the result was interesting. Whilst it did feel a little slow at times due to the intertwining stories. I enjoyed it a lot and can’t wait for the next instalment
