I read Shadow and Bone a while ago for the first time but it didn’t really stick to my brain and I’m determined to read  all the books set in  the Grisha world so  I did a re-read. Shadow and Bone is the first in The Grisha series and introduces to some familiar characters cross people’s lips. Mal, The Darking and the Grisha.

A YA fantasy story that has become pretty popular for being on e of  the trailblazers.  But who is the Grisha who everyone talks about. Who is the person  behind the Grisha  and how did things come in to play.

Going back to the beginning, was the best way to discover and learn the story.  Whilst it could be paced a little faster, there was much to love about these characters and the world that Baradugo has created.

Alina is ordinary girl serving her king until she plucked out of  obscurity  thanks to chance events. When she discovers she has rare magical gifts.  Sounds like many other fantasy novels but there more to the story.  It is the characters that make the story along side the history of the nation . The kingdom Ravka has been destroyed by the fold which revolves around everyone’s life.  There no answer to stop the fold until Alina.

. Alina is a  strong character and it helped her long the way. She didn’t forget about the little people  either. There isn’t anything to hate about especially when Mal acts like an ass. She there for him even when he was stuck back home doing all they ever known whilst she discovered  a new world and was herald as the saviour.

Alina is taken in by the Grisha, a class above the ordinary citizens who help the kingdom. Each one of these peoples are able to do various type of magic that are deemed useful . Lead by the Darkling,  Alina’s awaking is  means hope for them even as they aren’t able to solve all of Ravka’s problems  . However things aren’t straight forward as each of the main characters has their own agenda for the future  and  both guys want Alina for their own.

Stuck in love triangle and  trying to find her way. Shadow and Bone has all the classic elements of good YA book. Whilst  this is the only beginning,  I did enjoy this tale, and could see why people have fall in love with series and I can’t wait to read more.
