Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim it, he’ll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist:
Break into the notorious Ice Court
(a military stronghold that has never been breached)
Retrieve a hostage
(who could unleash magical havoc on the world)
Survive long enough to collect his reward
(and spend it)
Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done – and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable – if they don’t kill each other first.
I enjoyed Bardugo’s previous series which is connected to this series. Same world which is better known as Grishaverse but different characters and setting. It takes everything I loved about the first series and makes it ten times better.
Think Ocean 11 but told fantasy style. Match made in heaven for me and I devoured this book as Baurdugo got a good story here. She takes the familiarity we adored from the Shadow and Bone series and allows to continue that story in a roundabout way. By using the aftermath of those previous events to shape Ketterdam . As like I said before this is a new setting. Ketterdam isn’t a familiar one but it’s rich and creative addition to this world we already know . And that is only the beginning.
So obviously our leader and main players of the game has to be someone interesting and Kaz didn’t disappoint. He may not be a Grisha but he is talented and hungry for success. He wants to make a name for himself and he has carved quite a name for himself as a criminal prodigy . Changing the ways of the gang for the better and controlling quite an enterprise . However things aren’t smooth sailing lately we quickly learn despite controlling more than he ever dreamt. And so when he offered a job that appeals to his nature you know that this book is only going to a treat. As who would want to do the unthinkable and become a legend by breaking in and out of the Ice Court .
A suicide mission it is described as , Kaz isn’t going in just to prove a point for money. He going to rescue someone and they are a valuable hostage that everyone wants. It’s going to take a team and he knows the right people luckily. However it’s far from smooth sailing.
Action drive, Six of Crows is undouble my favourite read of Bardugo’s to date . Whilst I loved Aliana and the gang in the first series. Kaz is a force to be reckoned with and the others characters are ones that you want by your side as well in a heist. From the gungslinger Jesper to Grisha Nina who loves the man who job is to kill her Matthis. This team made of outcasts is perfect and there is a lot to love about each of them.
The story is one that shows a lot but works given that it’s action driven and there is a lot covered in book. As an interesting rag tag team for a heist and I can’t wait to see how they deal with the aftermath in Crooked Kingdom. Given that so much was revealed and some interesting information at that changed the world of Grisha verse .
